The State Chief Secretary Subhash Kumar on Monday informed that power generation will be stopped for about two months at the Maneribhali-II power project for maintenance to be undertaken following the damage wreaked by the last year disaster.
Subhash further informed that the disaster experienced in Uttarakhand during August 2012 and on June 16-17 last year had caused widespread damage in the mountainous State. life has been affected substantially due to floods in the Kedar valley and Uttarkashi district.
In the Uttarkashi district, the local population especially in the Gyansu settlement and slum settlement in Joshiyada area and other localities, have been affected severely due to the embankments along the Bhagirathi river being damaged by flood in the river. It is essential to facilitate the repair and construction of these embankments before the onset of the rainy season so that such problems can be avoided in the coming monsoon.
For these safety works, the Joshiyada reservoir will have to be emptied. Due to this the power generation at Maneribhali-II will have to be stopped for about two months from March 11 which in turn will decrease the power availability in Uttarakhand by about 1.2 million units per day. Water will be released from the reservoir from Monday night, said Kumar while directing officials to ensure that proper care is taken in this process.
