One man was gored fatally by a tusker in the Haldwani forest division late on Saturday evening. Officials said that the family of the deceased had been informed and as per the official provisions, an ex gratia of Rs 3 lakh has been announced for the dependents of the deceased.

The divisional forest officer Chandrashekhar Sanwal informed that news was received about a tusker entering an agricultural field near Kishan Malla village in Chakata range late on Saturday evening. The forest department personnel and local villagers were attempting to herd the pachyderm away from the farm. At this time, Devidhura- Champawat native Bhim Singh Padiyar happened to get too close to the elephant as a result of which the pachyderm made a sudden move which resulted in Padiyar being gored in the abdomen by a tusk of the elephant.

The other people somehow managed to shoo the jumbo away and took the seriously injured Bhim Singh to a hospital nearby. From this hospital, he was referred to the Sushila Tiwari Government college hospital in Haldwani. He succumbed to his injury while undergoing treatment at the hospital in Haldwani on Sunday.

The forest range officer Shalini Joshi informed that the family members of Bhim Singh had been informed about the incident and were expected to arrive here soon. The Rs 3 lakh ex gratia announced for his dependents will be handed over to them on their arrival here.
