High alert has been sounded in Haridwar district on Wednesday, particularly for the low- lying areas of laksar, Khanpur, Bhogpur, Shyampur and Kangri and their surrounding villages, by the district administration with the water level of Ganga canal being on the rise.
Though Ganga is flowing around 60 cm below the danger mark the 48-hour heavy rain forecast by the Met department has made the district administration and the district disaster management team to sit in alarm. An apprehension is running in them that the level of Ganga would cross the danger mark any time with heavy rains battering the mountainous areas of the state.
Speaking of the matter, SDO upper Ganga canal Sushil Yadav said, “We have asked the district administration to issue high alert for the low- lying areas of the district. Besides, we advised the villagers inhabiting such areas to shift to safer places. Ganga is now flowing here just 0.6 metres below the danger mark. We are concerned with heavy rains being forecast for the next two days.”
District magistrate Deepak Rawat said that the level of Ganga being on the rise, it touched 293.40 meters at 2 pm on Wednesday which is about 60 centimetres below the danger mark. “We have asked the disaster team to be ready to handle any kind of exigency. All tehsils have been asked too to be ready with flood control measures.”
