locals bear brunt of roadways staffers' strike

People faced a tough time following strike of the roadways employees here on Thursday.

A heavy spell of rain this afternoon only added to the woes of the harrowing travelers and the pedestrians. The agitating roadways employees under the banner of the Roadways Karmchari Sanyukt Morcha blocked vehicular traffic on the busy Haldwani- Nainital highway, opposing grant of permission to the private bus operators for plying their vehicles on the Nainital-Dehradun Road.

The agitating employees of the roadways were of the view that since there are adequate number of buses presently plying on the Nainital-Dehradun Road, therefore, allowing the private bus operators to run their buses on this road will only have an adverse impact on the economic health of the roadways.

More so, such decision of giving permission to the private operators may also render many roadways employees jobless, they feared. However, following the protest of the roadways employees, passengers including the distant travelers had to face a tough time as the vehicular traffic here remained disrupted for two hours from 11 am.

I have to take a bus for Delhi from here. But I am now over two hour late due to this strike, said Sanjeev Sanwal, a resident of Haldwani. My major concern is that I have to catch train from Delhi for some other place. I am already late now. let us see, he added.
