local traders protest against MDDA's redevelopment plan

Members of Doon Udhyog Vyapar Mandal and associations of regional and local shopkeepers from Chakrata Road and Indira market under the banner of Chakrata Road Shopkeepers and Residents Welfare Society took out a rally against the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority’s Chakrata Road redevelopment plan here on Monday morning.

They rallied to the District Collectorate where a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister was submitted by the protesters who also plan to observe Doon Bandh on Wednesday if the Government doesn’t act on their demand.

President of the Chakrata Road traders association, Rajesh Goyal said, “As per the MDDA’s redevelopment plan, multi-storeyed buildings will be constructed on both sides of the Chakrata Road. This is aimed at providing ulterior benefit to some politicians and builders,”he alleged.

The protesting traders complained that the administration has been consistently ignoring their demand to convert their Nazul property into free-hold on this road. The protesters submitted a memorandum addressed to the CM to the district magistrate and sought a proactive solution to their problem. Pacifying the traders, the DM BVRC Purushottam said that he will surely submit their demands to the Chief Minister and assured them of an early solution.

It will be recalled that about a year ago, many shops were completely or partially demolished for widening the Chakrata Road and the affected traders were shifted to shops in the new shopping complex built near the Clock Tower.

Many of the shopkeepers relocated here are still dissatisfied with the condition in this complex due to which the business fraternity is not open to trusting the authority once again.

The protesting members of the business fraternity have planned to observe Doon Bandh on Wednesday if the government fails to respond proactively to their opposition.
