A Superintending Engineer  (SE) of Jal Sansthan, who had been arrested by the vigilance department on the charge of  allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 25,000 in return for giving a  work contract to a private firm, was sent by a local special court dealing with anti-corruption matters to jail for 14 days in judicial custody here on Thursday.

The engineer was sent by the special court to jail, said Ashok Bhatt, SP, vigilance department, Haldwani, while talking to The Pioneer. Further steps are being taken to complete necessary formalities in this case, he added.  It may be recalled that suspect   J R Gupta, SE, Jal Sansthan, was arrested red handed by a team of vigilance department  at his residence on  Wednesday when he was accepting Rs 25,000 as bribe from the private contractor. Earlier, the deal was finalised between the SE and the private contractor for granting the work contract to the said private contractor at  Rs 50,000.  After paying half of the amount initially as per the deal, rest of the amount i.e. Rs 25, 000 had to be paid to the suspect by the private firm contractor after completion of the work.

However, after finalising the deal with the said SE, the private contractor also took up the matter with the vigilance department here.  In the meanwhile, when the complaint was found correct, then we proceeded to trap the senior official of the jal sasthan and he was subsequently arrested , added the officials concerned of the vigilance department.
