'liquor ban may raise risk to public health'

The excise department of Uttarakhand has shown disinterest on the suggestion of imposing total prohibition in the State till the end of elections.  In a letter directed to the Chief Election Officer of Uttarakhand, the State Excise Commissioner has said that the department effectively controls the sale of liquor in the state.

In his letter the commissioner has opined that liquor smuggling in the State would get increased if the prohibition in the State is imposed which would put the health of residents at peril. The Chief Election Officer has sent the letter of the excise commissioner to Central Election Commission.

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Ravindra Jugaran had submitted a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi during his recent visit requesting the commission to impose prohibition in the state till the end of the elections in the state.  Acting on the letter the state election commission has asked the excise department to submit a report on the suggestion.
