Haridwar district forest department handed over a cheque of Rs3 lakh as a compensation to the family members of three-year-old Rakib who was killed by a leopard in Jassawala village on July 25.

The incident happened around noon when Rakib was taken to field by his father Shameem where he was working. The field being in Jassawala area near the forest, the leopard sprang upon the little boy and dragged him away from the field.  Following the boy being mauled to death, the villagers had vented their anger against the district forest department.  They had withdrawn after the circle officer (CO) Roorkee Kuldeep Aswal had assured the villagers that the family members of the deceased would be adequately compensated.

Accordingly, deputy director forest department Haridwar Santram reached the village and handed over the cheque of Rs 3 lakhs to Shameem, father of the deceased.
