A leopard cub rescued from the Garhi cantonment area on Friday morning was released in its natural habitat after a health check by the Forest Department.

The leopard cub, a few months old, was being carried by its mother when she dropped it in alarm on seeing some humans nearby, it was reported.According to locals, a leopardess was crossing the road with her cub in her mouth near Kendriya Vidyalaya, Birpur, when it saw an army truck approaching. The big cat reportedly dropped its cub in alarm on seeing the approaching truck.  A crowd gathered to see the cub dropped by the big cat while the army contacted the forest department. According to the Dehradun sub divisional officer Gulveer Singh, the leopard cub rescued from near KV Birpur is a few months old, aged less than a year.

“The cub underwent a health check up and was found to be healthy and without any injury. We felt that keeping it in an enclosure at this stage might prove detrimental to its hunting abilities so we released it into its natural habitat away from human habitation later in the day. We will continue to monitor the area,” he added.
