leopard cub dies in sugarcane fields

A leopard died after it hid itself in sugarcane fields with the residents from a village in the Pathri area trying to confine it in a cage made of rope. Earlier, the leopard on entering the village left the villagers scared.

Before the foresters reached the site, the cub died.  The cause leading to its death was ascribed to the wounds some insects might have inflicted on it. The carcass was later sent for autopsy by the Haridwar forest range officers.

It is learnt that the a two- and half year-old female cub stole its way into the house of one Mahavir Singh of Pathri village around  11.30 am on Monday. As Mahavir raised alarm the villagers gathered and were engaged in capturing the cub  in a cage made of rope.

However, the cub hid itself in the nearby sugarcane fields and the villagers failed to locate it.

Speaking of the matter, Haridwar forest ranger Mahesh Semwal said, “The cub, a female one aged about two and half year, was spotted by our team in a field following a long-drawn search.

However, it was found dead. We are of the view that the deep wounds inflicted on it by some insects might have caused its death. The carcass was sent for post-mortem. The report would ascertain the exact cause of its death.”
