Undertaking a campaign with the help of various people and organisations, the Society of Pollution and Environmental Conservation Scientists (SPECS) worked in eight Gram Sabhas of the Asi Ganga valley in Uttarkashi district for replacing the normal 100 watt bulb by seven watt lED bulb.

According to the society, this will result in the saving of 3,727 units of electricity per day and 13,60,355 units of electricity in a year. SPECS also imparted training for repairing lED bulbs in the valley to minimise e-waste and save hard earned money of the villagers.

SPECS secretary Brij Mohan Sharma said villagers of Gram Sabhas, including Agoda, Seku, Uttaro, Nald, Dadsa, Naogaon, Gazoli and Bhankoli of Asi Ganga valley, became the residents of India’s first energy saving valley.

This step will not only help conserve energy but also reduce the financial burden on the villagers saving them from paying large electricity bills. There are various villages in Uttarakhand where supply of electricity was cut because the people were unable to pay heavy bills of electricity, added Sharma. He further informed that this campaign will benefit 115 families of Dasda Gram Sabha, 140 families of Agoda Gram Sabha, 180 families of Bhankoli Gram Sabha, 435 families of Uttaro Gram Sabha, 335 families of Nald Gram Sabha, 95 families of Seku Gram Sabha, 180 families of Naogaon Gram Sabha and 190 families of Gazoli Gram Sabha.

All the seven watt bulbs were assembled by various persons trained by SPECS including villagers, inmates of Hardwar jail, youth and differently persons of the state. The lED bulbs, if fused due to low or high voltage can be rapaired. SPECS has been imparting training in making lED bulbs since 2007 and has also been recognised for this effort with various awards, added Sharma.

Villager Sarita Devi appreciated the development stating that using the seven watt lED bulbs instead of the 100 watt bulbs will help in about 93 per cent electricity saving. Sangeeta Devi of Naogaon opined that it was a smart move which would have a positive impact on the economy of the villagers.

The option to repair will also help in saving money and minimise waste in the valley, she added.
