At the start of the two-day long strike call by Bar Council of Uttarakhand, lawyers in Dehradun boycotted their work on Wednesday in protest against the attack on the lawyers by villagers on February 7 in Haridwar.
The protesters demanded transfer of Haridwar senior superintendent of police without delay. In the attack, many lawyers were injured and their chambers were broken. The protesters alleged that the police had remained mute spectators while violence was being perpetrated on lawyers. If the government does not take action against the police officer concerned then they would intensify their stir, said the protesters.
However, Uttarakhand Director General of Police BS Sidhu said that in connection with this case, police had lodged FIR and counter FIR after receiving complaints from both the parties involved in the incident. Police are investigating the case on priority basis and action will be taken based on report submitted by the investigating officer, he added. Meanwhile, many people who reached the court compound had to return empty handed due to the work boycott by advocates.
