The last rites of Mahesh Gurung of Assam Rifles who was killed in a militant ambush in Manipur  were performed at Kankhal cremation grounds on Teh banks of Ganga on Wednesday with full state honour. The martyred soldier was from Clement Town of  Dehradun and was among the six soldiers killed in  the ambush that the militants triggered near Indo-Myanmar border in Chandel district of Manipur while they were coming back from a land-slide affected village to their base camp on May 21. The Jawans belonged to 29 Assam Rifles. A militant outfit CorCom had taken responsibility for the attack in which five Jawans and one junior commissioned officer (JCO) were killed.

On reaching the cremation grounds, the jawans of Assam Rifles  lowered  their guns and fired three rounds in the air in the honour of their martyred comrade. Eyes were teary when the body of the brave son of Uttarakhand was brought to the cremation spot wrapped in Indian Tricolour. The senior officials of Assam Rifles aside from several   district administration and police officials  were present on the occasion.
