lack of civic sense hits river cleaning work

Published on:

lack of civic sense in the city is posing challenges for officers working on the cleaning of the Rispana and Bindal rivers.

When asked about the major problem being faced by the officials, the secretary of Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) and acting additional Mukhya Nagar Adhikari, Bansidhar Tiwari said that there is complete absence of civic sense in the locals here and their non-cooperative attitude of people in areas along the Rispana and Bindal rivers is creating a problematic situation for the authorities cleaning the rivers and banks.

He said that people have got habituated to dumping garbage and waste materials in the river. Therefore, the officers are unable to effectively clean the riverbeds. Regarding measures planned by officials to achieve a permanent solution to this problem, Tiwari said that in addition to fencing the authorities are planning to construct high walls along the rivers to prevent dumping of garbage in the rivers.

It is pertinent to mention that recently Chief Minister Harish Rawat had instructed the officials concerned to improve the deteriorating sanitation level in the city. later, the then AMNA Uday Singh Rana was nominated as the nodal officer for the task of cleaning the Rispana, the then Additional District Magistrate Harak Singh Rawat was appointed nodal officer for Bindal river and Tiwari was nominated as the nodal officer for the cleaning of other small rivers in the town.

But after the recent transfer of AMNA Rana, Tiwari the acting AMNA has been given charge to look into the sanitation arrangement of Rispana and other small rivers as well.  Tiwari said, “We are making all efforts to clean the rivers but this will be futile when silt and garbage are brought back here by the rainwater during the rainy season,” he said.
