The Kumaon University is going to establish a Cancer Biology Department. This would be second university after Gujarat, where a masters’ degree in cancer biology will be on offer. Besides this, research will be conducted in various fields of cancer therapy, nano-science and technology in Kumaon University.
The varsity will take support from the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in America in the cancer biology field. A presentation was made before the Chief Secretary, Subhash Kumar, on the subject at the Secretariat on Tuesday.
The CS said that the state grew several herbs which would help in fighting life threatening diseases such as cancer. He welcomed Kumaon University’s proposal and said that this would help the economy of the state, particularly nano-technology.
This technology would be particularly helpful in the power sector of the state. Secretary, Higher Education, Manisha Panwar said that the Kumaon University Bio-Technology Institute wanted to use Patwa Dangar for this purpose. The institute used to earlier make anti-rabies vaccine. A part of the 103 acre area of Patwa Dangar could be used for the cancer biology facility.
VC, Kumaon University, HS Dhami said that America’s Rosewell Cancer Institute along with several international organisations were ready to extend their support. The proposed institute would be the country’s first institute where there would be a facility for Photo Dynamic therapy. He added that the coming times would belong to nano-technology and there was need to be ready for this in advance.
Present at the meeting were Principal Secretary, Agriculture, Ranveer Singh, Additional Secretary, Education, Rahika Jha and other officials.
