Kailash Hospital based in Dehradun led by Dr Akhilesh Pandey and his team have claimed to have achieved a major breakthrough by conducting a successful open heart surgery while applying minimally invasive approach on a patient Meenakshi, a resident of Vikasnagar - the first of its kind in Uttarakhand. The press release issued by the hospital said that the patient requiring valve replacement for a blocked valve, she was offered minimally invasive approach for open heart surgery in consideration of her age.
The release claims that minimally invasive approach for open heart surgery enables the patient to return home early following prompt recovery to resume normal physical activity. Kailash Hospital medical superintendent Dr Atish Sinha said that on March 24, minimally invasive cardiac surgery involving Mitral Valve Replacement was conducted by Dr lucia Toraca from Milan (Italy) and Akhilesh Pandey, senior CTVS surgeon associated with Kailash Hospital Dehradun.
“In the conventional approach for open heart surgery, we need to cut the breast bone to get to the heart. In minimally invasive approach, we make a very small cut on the side of the chest and get to the heart through space between the ribs. This procedure requires specialized training and specialized equipment along with camera system,” he said during a press conference on Tuesday.
