Elephants damaged two walls and ate up sacks of wheat stored in the seed plant of the Uttarakhand Seeds and Terai Development Corporation (USTDC) here. The three pachyderms ate up about 10 sacks of wheat.
The office-in-charge of the plant, Mohit Sharma said that early on Friday morning at about 4:15 AM, three elephants broke portion of the boundary wall and entered the compound. The elephants tore the polythene chamber and ate up about 10 sack worth of wheat stored there. Sensing something, the watchman posted at the gate, Raghunath Yadav raised the alarm and made noise. Due to the noise one of the elephants broke a portion of the boundary wall near the gate to exit the compound. The watchman then opened the main gate and himself went inside the check post for safety. The other two elephants left the compound through the opened main gate. The pachyderms went towards the fishery department pond where there were already about four elephants present. It is being reported that earlier, these elephants also damaged standing maize crop in the farms at the Nagla dairy compound.
