Research is being conducted through the US Joint Working Group to start work on cancer related medical tests, therapy and global level health education programmes. Scientist from the Centre for Cancer Research- National Institute of Health (NIH), Maryland, US , Dr Anu Puri said this while speaking on nano-medicine, cancer and drug delivery platform in Dehradun on Friday. She was speaking at a lecture jointly organised by the Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology (UCOST) Uttarakhand Science Education and Research Centre (USERC) about the works being undertaken through the Indo-US joint working group.

During her lecture, Dr Puri spoke on cancer fighting medicines, formulations and other aspects related to cancer. She said that the main purpose of her visit is to establish coordination between the National Institute of Health and major institutions working in the health sector in Uttarakhand. Speaking on the occasion, the UCOST director general and USERC director Vijay Kumar Dhaundiyal said that Joint Working Groups of various nations can play a major role in the fight against cancer at the global level. Medicines available at present do fight cancer cells but they have their limitations. The high cost of cancer fighting medicines keeps them out of the reach of the general public. The development of nano drug delivery system can not only bring about a revolutionary change in the prevention and treatment of cancer but can also radically bring down the cost of treating various types of cancers. Dhaundiyal stressed that UCOST should undertake a state-wide detailed programme for encouraging alternative medical systems and encouraging cancer awareness between India and the USA. UCOST joint director Dr BP Purohit, senior scientist Dr DP Uniyal and others from the council were also present on the occasion.
