Taking a strong note of the reports of some hardened criminals running their crime racket from behind bars over mobile phones, the State police top brass has decided to make the superintendents of jails accountable. Ashok Kumar, additional director general of police (law and order), said this while chairing a meeting with the IG jail, senior police and jail officers at police headquarters on Wednesday.
Kumar directed Jail IG to take measures to clamp down heavily on criminal activities continuing from behind the prison cells.
He further said that a police post would be set up near each jail located across the state. “A jail monitoring group would be formed taking intelligence staffers as members to keep vigil on the movements of the criminals lodged in jails. Vigil should be kept on those who visit the notorious criminals,” he said.
He also directed SSP/SPs to conduct inspection of the jails along with district magistrates once a week as part of the vigilance exercise. Jail bomb disposal squad and metal detector squad should also be involved during such jail inspection, Kumar said.
