Issue of house tax notices to building owners from June 1

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun will begin issuing house tax notices to building owners in the State capital from June 1. Apart from this the municipal tax on goats slaughtered in the municipal abattoir has been raised from Rstwo per animal to Rs150 per animal.

These developments are expected to generate considerable revenue for the corporation. After a meeting chaired by Dehradun Mayor Vinod Chamoli, it was decided that the MCD will begin work on collecting house tax based on rental value of buildings from June 1. In the first phase, the house tax on new buildings will be collected after which the tax on buildings for which it is already being paid, will be calculated afresh based on rental value.

The corporation expects to earn about Rs10 crore a year through house tax on about one lakh buildings in the municipal area. In another development, the MCD has also decided to raise the tax on goats slaughtered at the municipal abattoir in Bhandaribagh. At a time when the cost of mutton is more than Rs350 per kg in Dehradun, the old tax rate of Rstwo per goat was not proving profitable for the corporation.
