An interactive session on domestic violence was organised at Government Girls Inter College, Rajpur Road by Saheli Trust.

The session was attended by about 70 senior girls. The session was conducted by Saheli secretary Shruti Kaushik who said that it is a sad state of affairs but statistics show that around 70 per cent of women in India have been subjected to domestic violence which is much higher than the world wide average of 40 per cent, which itself is quite shocking.

She said that women often keep quiet about physical and mental abuse because of social fears, lack of support system and inadequate knowledge of their legal rights and lack of self confidence.

She said that Saheli was providing help to women subjected to domestic violence in Dehradun. Basics of Domestic Violence Act were explained to the children in the session.Principal of GGIC

Rajpur Road, Mohini Thapliyal expressed her gratitude at the efforts of Saheli and said that the information would be an enabling factor in reducing the incidence of violence at home and educating senior children on the issue which was of vital importance.

It is pertinent to mention here that Saheli  has been active in Dehradun in protecting victims of domestic violence and has also been involved in empowering women through education and it's Women's Self Help Group has been enabling about a dozen rural women in Chandrabani, to gain a regular income every month.
