Shaken up by the incident where the doctors and staff of the female wing of the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) performed nine deliveries under candle light and under the light of mobile phones on late Wednesday night, the principal of the college, Dr Ashutosh Sayana, has constituted an inquiry. The principal said that strict action would be taken against those responsible for the power failure in the hospital. He, however, appreciated the doctors and other staff members for performing in such conditions and discharging their duties successfully.
The freak incident had occurred on Wednesday when between 8 pm and 10 pm, a power outage occurred.
When the guard of the female wing had tried to start the generator, it had failed to function. He had promptly informed the doctors on duty after which the medical superintendent (MS), Dr K K Tamta, had been contacted.
The MS had directed the electrician and the supervisor to visit the hospital and fix fault. It is learnt that the supervisor and the electrician refused to attend to the generator, citing rain.
Meanwhile, labour pains had started in some admitted patients and the doctors had successfully handled nine deliveries, using candlelight and the light of the mobile phones.
