Inmates create ruckus in shelter, PAC deployed

Published on:

Unruly scenes were witnessed at Nari Niketan, the State Government-run shelter home for the distressed women, on Thursday night after two inmates-both minors-erupted in violence, demanding to be sent to the places of their choice, prompting the department to have PAC jawans and police personnel deployed.  To defuse the tension,  the Minister of State (Independent) for Women Welfare and Child Development, Rekha Arya, Uttarakhand Women Commission chair person Sarojini Kainthura and its secretary Ramindri Mandrawal visited the home and met the inmates on Friday.

Sources said that demanding to be sent to the places of their choice,  the two inmates had turned violent on Thursday night,  throwing stones at the  windows and the doors of the shelter home. However, the social welfare department officials refused to budge, saying that the court having sent them to the home, they would be allowed to leave only on the court’s order.

Speaking of the matter, the district probation officer Meena Bisht said that the inmates have come to Nari Niketan following the court’s order and they would be released only after the court orders the same. She claimed that everything was normal on Friday.

Sources said that the two inmates had raised the same demand of being sent to their home or the places of their choice when they had  met Nari Niketan superintendent Kanchan Arya.  Arya had reportedly asked them to stay put in the home till the court passed the relevant order. This reportedly had infuriated them and they had stated pelting the home with stones, smashing window panes and doors.   Subsequently,  one and half section of PAC women jawans was deployed to control the situation.
