An ‘In-house patients’ day’ was organised at the Max Super Speciality Hospital on Saturday. Pre and post-surgery patients interacted with medical experts on the occasion.
The patients were informed about the threat posed by obesity and increased level of cholesterol. Speaking on the occasion, the Senior Consultant, Minimal Access, Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, Max Hospital, Dr Vandana Soni said that Indians now report more and more frequently with overweight, obesity and the country is just behind US and China in this global hazard.
“Indians exhibit unique features of obesity like excess body fat, abdominal adiposity, increased subcutaneous and intra-abdominal fat, and deposition of fat in ectopic sites (such as liver, muscle, and others). Obesity is a major driver for the widely prevalent type-II diabetes also.
Through this camp, we hope to make people aware of the burgeoning incidence of obesity in the region and how small and simple lifestyle changes can do wonders and keep them healthy- which is the first step towards fighting obesity,’’ she said.
Dr Soni further added that if repeated efforts to reduce weight fails, then one should consider weight loss surgery/bariatric surgery.
She claimed that this surgery not only treats obesity but also controls and treats other serious obesity related diseases like diabetes, sleep apnoea, hypertension, heart ailments and degenerative joint diseases.
