The Infantry Day was marked with senior serving and retired officers of Indian armed forces laying wreaths on the war memorial located at Indian Military Academy (IMA) here on Monday.

The day is celebrated to commemorate the achievement of the Indian Army in its maiden military engagement after the independence. On October 27, 1947 the first contingent of infantry soldiers landed at Srinagar airfield to protect the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity against the Pakistani aggression.

As a mark of respect to the martyrs of Infantry the Commandant of IMA, lt General Manvender Singh and lt General Anand Swarup (Rtd) laid floral wreaths at the war memorial.

The IMA Commandant conveyed his best wishes to all the infantrymen and asked them to uphold the highest tradition of the Infantry and ensure territorial integrity of the nation.

He said that the Infantry is the most battle hardened and indispensable component of Indian armed forces. Paying glowing tribute to the infantrymen, lt General Singh said that considering the need to guard India’s inhospitable and rugged terrain in its northern and eastern frontiers, Infantry would continue to remain most operationally committed combat arm of Indian army.
