During a checking drive conducted by Haridwar police, two people were arrested near Jwalapur who were found carrying illicit liquor to be sold in a village. Five containers of spurious liquor have been recovered from them, police said and added that the duo have attempted to escape in the car they were in when the cops challenged them.

It is further learnt from police that when Jwalapur police was checking the vehicles on Monday morning, the duo attempted to escape with the car they were in by taking  a sharp turn at Jatwada bridge in Jwalapur.

Speaking to The Pioneer about the incident, SSP Janmeyjay Khanduri said, “During the vehicle checking drive, our team, led by the sub-inspector, Vikas Bhardwaj, nabbed two people and the case has been registered against them under the provisions of the excise Act.”

The duo have been identified as Kadir and Haider, both residents of Munda Khedi village under tehsil Luxor, police informed.

Notably, in a hooch tragedy, one of the worst in the country, nearly 150 people of Balupur and Bindukhadak villages in Chudiyala of Haridwar district and some villages in Saharanpur district of neighbouring Uttar Pradesh had died after they consumed illicit liquor while observing the 13th day of the mourning of a deceased friend on February 8.  Since the tragedy occurred, the police have been vigorously conducting raids to seize spurious liquor. A senior district police officer said that they are on alert to stop illicit liquor from being supplied to the villages in Haridwar district.
