IIT passed resolution for shunning gowns

The trend of the universities shunning the British legacy of wearing the ceremonial gowns during convocations continuing, the Indian Institute of Technology which was previously known as Thomson College of Engineering has passed a resolution at its senate to go for the traditional Indian attire from its next year’s convocation.  This year’s convocation is scheduled to be held on September 23 this year.

It is learnt that a few days ago, the members of the committees had sent a proposal to the senate to change the dress code for the convocation. The director of the institute Professor A K Chaturvedi while talking to The  Pioneer  said that the matter was discussed during the meeting of the senate held on July28.  “A new committee would be formed to decide the new dress,” he added.

Asked whether the changes would be effected from the next convocation slated in September, he said that very little time left for it, it is a bit difficult to switch. “ Arranging the  new apparel  for the students, the  chief guest as well as the faculty members in such a short period is a little difficult. However, the switch would be made definitely from the convocation to be held next year,” he said.
