Paving the way for the construction of the permanent campus of National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar Garhwal, the Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry has approved a sum of Rs 909.85 Crore. The Union HRD minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ approved the detailed project report (DPR) for the permanent campus of the elite institute on Wednesday.

As per the DPR, a sum of Rs 831.04 crore would be spent on permanent campus construction at Sumadi. In the phase one the campus would be constructed keeping in view the student strength of 1,260 students.  In the campus the proposed plinth area is 90,450 square meters.

Apart from the main campus a sum of Rs  78.81 Crore would be spent on improvement of existing facilities like hostel, lecture hall and labs at the existing campus.

The Uttarakhand Government had recently transferred land of ITI and Silk Farm to the NIT. The HRD minister is planning to use the campus of NIT as Himalayan Stability Centre in future. Post Graduate programmes like MBA, MCA and others would also start in the campus in future.

Set up in the year 2010 in Srinagar in Garhwal, the NIT is functioning from a temporary campus. The administrative block and the labs are in the old ITI campus while the students have to go to the Poly-technique college campus for classes.

For many years the process of identifying land for the permanent campus and its construction was hanging in balance. After clearing all obstacles, the foundation stone for the university’s permanent campus was laid on October 19 last year.

Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat thanked the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union HRD minister for the development.

He said that this will help fulfill a long standing demand of the state’s people. The State’s Higher Education minister Dhan Singh Rawat thanked Nishank and the CM for the approval.
