Around half dozen criminals, covering faces, burgled a house located at Pratit Nagar, in Raiwala, Dehradun on late Friday night after they confined the house-owner Hori Singh and his wife in a room at gunpoint. They decamped with jewellery worth lakhs.

The residents are angry, saying that the police patrolling is proving ineffective. “With police lowering guard, the miscreants are committing such crimes. We are feeling insecure,” one of them said.

Dehradun Rural SP GC Dhyani said that Hori Singh has registered a complaint and a case under section 392 of IPC has been registered against unidentified persons in the Police Station, Raiwala on Saturday. In his written complaint, Hori said that around six criminals had entered his home from the back side after breaking the window. The criminals had entered the house around 2 am and at gun point, they confined Singh and his wife and looted his house for around an hour.

The criminals had decamped with jewelry worth lakhs of rupees. Singh said that with his two sons working in Japan, the daughter- in- laws had kept jewelries in the house. The criminals had locked the house from outside before they left. The victims screaming for help aroused the neighbours who came to help them.

Dhyani said that as per the preliminary inquiry report, there was little likelihood of Kachchha Baniyan gang members being involved in this dacoity.  The criminals in the case under question asking the couple to remain silent and refraining from beating the couple runs counter to the modus operendi of the notorious gang, he said.  The criminals might have done dress rehearsal before committing the crime, he added.

Dhyani further said that police team had inspected the house and several teams from Special Operation Group (SOG) and local police station have been formed to crack the case.

Observers say that with festive seasons drawing nearer, cases of robbery and burglary are on the rise. lack of police patrolling in the outskirt areas is encouraging the criminals to commit such crimes, they say. Police should better intensify patrolling to check such crimes in the district, they add.
