The decision of the State Government to allow the Government Medical College Hospitals to use part of the money collected as user charge would help in better administration of these hospitals. These hospitals would now be able to spend 50 percent of the user charges collected for immediate requirements. The hospitals collect user charges as registration fee, charges levied on pathology and diagnostic tests, bed charges and operation theatre charges. In order the secretary medical health and family welfare Nitesh Jha said that the medical college hospitals can use half of the user charges collected. The hospitals would now don’t have to take approval of the health department for sundry expenses. They would now be able to purchase medicines, order repair and maintenance of the machines and other administrative expenses without delay. At present the hospitals have to deposit the user charges in district treasury. In the Government Doon Medical College ( GDMC) hospital for instance an annual user charge of Rs 6 Crore is collected. The hospital administration would now be in a position to use half of this amount on its own.
