HNGBU-SDSUV row leaves students in lurch

Published on:

The controversy between HNB Garhwal Central University (HNGBU) and Shri Dev Suman Uttarakhand University for issuing the degree of SDS Uttarakhand University (SDSUV) has affected the fate of nearly 10,000 students.

The administrations of both the universities keep on pleading their points of view for not issuing the certificates.

The Garhwal Central University had conducted the examination of private M.A. and M.Com of the Shri Dev Suman Uttarakhand University for the academic session 2011-13 and issued the mark- sheets of the private candidates in 2014 in the logo of the SDS Uttarakhand University.

However, the issuance of degrees by the Garhwal Central University to the students hangs in balance, as the university has refused to issue the same.  Intervening, the Uttarakhand Principal Secretary wrote a letter to the Garhwal Central University.

HNGBU sent reply on the matter on 8 October 2014. The matter supposedly ended there, as the university has not received any communication from the State Government since then. Now the matter as to who will issue the degrees to these candidates is still a mystery.

Garhwal Central University registrar P S Rana told The Pioneer in district headquarter Pauri that the Garhwal Central University had conducted the examination of Shri Dev Suman Uttarakhand University on the consideration/request that they had no infrastructure and staff to conduct the examination on its own.

The marksheets of the candidates were issued on the logo of the SDS Uttarakhand University. Rana wondered as to how the degree of the candidates can be issued in the logo of SDSUV while they must bear the signatures of the Garhwal Central University’s concerned officials.

These kinds of degrees to be conferred on the students might land them in trouble in future. Rana stressed that the Garhwal Central University is ready to give the software of the examination and its gazette to SDS Uttarakhand University, so that the latter could issue the degrees to the candidates.

If the Uttarakhand University suffers from staff crunch, the central university can provide it with the required manpower to tide over the problem of issuing the degrees to the candidates, added Rana.

“We have written to the Uttarakhand Principal Secretary, Higher Education, making our stance on the matter clear. However, we have not yet received any reply from the end of the State Government so far,” he added.
