Himalayan hospital adds feather in cap

The neurosurgeons of Himalayan Hospital in Dehradun claim to have successfully conducted a complex brain surgery on a young patient by using an endoscope.

The Neurosurgeon of the hospital, Dr Ranjit Kumar told The Pioneer that the patient, Guddu Kumar, a resident of Gaya, Bihar was suffering from severe headaches with repeated vomiting from past six months. Slowly, for the last 2 months his vision was also getting affected.

He said that the patient underwent a CT scan of the brain at Varanasi where the doctors told him that he had a tumor in the third ventricle of brain. This type of tumor is dangerous and could lead loss of vision and even precipitate sudden death.  Most of the experts consulted the patient to undergo surgery via the traditional route of opening the skull and taking the tumor out. Scared of major surgery of brain, Guddu Kumar was reluctant to proceed with this type treatment.

The doctors of the Himalayan hospital informed the patient that the tumor could be removed by using an endoscope. “In this type of surgery a small cut is made and the affected portion is removed by inserting an endoscope.  In the traditional method a large part of brain is exposed as a big cut is made which is risky for the patients. The endoscopic method has less post operative complication than the traditional method,’’ Dr Ranjit Kumar said.

Apart from Dr Ranjit Kumar, the team included Dr Yashbir Dewan, Dr Nagendra Rawat and Dr Amit Handa.  The surgery was performed on September 17 and the patient was released from the hospital on Wednesday.
