High Court gives relief to Dhami, MlA may stage protest

Relief to Congress MlA from Dharchula Assembly constituency Harish Dhami by the High Court of Uttarakhand (HCU) on Wednesday, in connection with a non bailable warrant (NBW) issued against  him by a local court in Pithoragarh, may come as embarrassing for the State Government as Dhami has threatened to stage protest in front of the office of  the Chief Minister.

"I'm going to stage dharna in front of the office of the Chief Minister demanding a fair probe into the 2007 case of Pithoragarh in which my name  has been dragged so that the truth could come out," Dhami said, while talking to The Pioneer.

It may be recalled that Dhami moved the HCU to seek bail in this aforesaid case. Considering his plea the HCU gave him relief and asked the MlA to be present in the said local court in Pithoragarh till May 20 as Dhami said.

Keeping in view the court’s order I am trying to be present in the local court in Didihat on Monday, Dhami further said.

However, he asserted that once the legal process is over, I will sit on ‘dharna’ in front of the CM’s office in Dehradun. My contention is that out of a huge gathering of about 500 people from Munshiyari and Madkot which ended up in a clash in 2007 (and the matter was amicably resolved later on), the then officials from the local administration Pithoragarh identified only me, Dhami wondered.

Since the matter was solved later on. Now raking up this old case is quite unperceiving. Therefore, I want a fair investigation into this matter so that the officials concerned could be identified who named me in this case, he asserted.

It seems it is not the legal battle that Dhami is presently facing but factionalism within the state unit of the Congress that has created uneasy moments for Dhami ever since he became party MlA from Dharchula assembly constituency which has always been in spotlight for many reasons like poor development.

Besides, his closeness to Congress vice –president Rahul Gandhi and Union Cabinet Minister Harish Rawat has not gone down well among the Congress activists of rival faction as Dhami’s well wishers here believe.

Yet, Dhami has quite aggressively raised issues related to his Assembly constituency and the matter of  fact is that to attract the State Government’s attention  towards the much-talked about poor development in his constituency, Dhami has already staged protest in the State capital and threatened his own  party Government in the State against negligence of his assembly seat.
