In view of the festive season, an alert has been sounded at the Corbett tiger reserve to intensify the level of wildlife security. The alert has been sounded in view of the increased probability of poachers and other elements making incursions into the protected areas during the festive period. The leaves of the Corbett staff have also been put on hold for now.
Providing this information, the Corbett deputy director Amit Verma said that patrolling has been intensified along the borders of Corbett in order to further enhance wildlife security. Special teams have also been formed by the Corbett administration for this purpose.
The tiger reserve administration has taken this step as part of measures taken in view of the increased probability of poachers and other wildlife criminals attempting to exploit the festival period to sneak into the protected forests.
Patrolling has been maximised along the southern boundary of Corbett tiger reserve as it is considered to be the most vulnerable boundary of the tiger reserve. This boundary is shared with neighbouring Uttar Pradesh which makes is more sensitive to incursions from the side of the neighbouring state. Tiger, leopard, elephant and other wild animals and reptiles are the ones generally targeted by poachers in Corbett apart from the timber and other forest produce also targeted by wildlife criminals.
