Hear grievances patiently, act accordingly, SSP tells cops

To improve police-public interface and effectively deal with people’s complaints, all the district inspectors, police stations in-charge and sub-inspectors have been directed to hear public grievances patiently and act accordingly, said Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police Kewal Khurana on Tuesday.

The ex-chairperson of Uttarakhand Women’s Commission Sushila Baluni said that due to police’s rude attitude and fear of being questioned unnecessarily, women usually avoid registering their complains in the police station. Some women’s complaints reported earlier in the commission have revealed that police treat women rudely. Instead of lodging an FIR against the accused when women approached the police station, police blamed the women for the wrongs they faced. Police give moral education to the victims stating family matters should not come out of the house.

Recently, when this correspondent reached police station Kotwali Cantt and tried to contact the inspector standing outside his office, he did not respond and went to his residence without saying anything.  When sub-inspector was told to arrange a meeting with inspector, he rudely told to contact the inspector on the number mentioned on the wall. After 10 minutes, sub-inspector arranged a meeting with inspector and said inspector was standing in the corner of the campus monitoring sanitation work.

The sub-inspector who was deputed to resolve disputes was seen scolding the victims to be silent otherwise they would be arrested.
