Petitioner seeks polls before November 2 or reinstatement of elected representatives

Hearing on a petition regarding the state government not being able to conduct local body elections, the high court single bench of justice Sudhanshu Dhulia has sought a reply from the state government in three weeks. The court will take up the matter for hearing next on October 23.

The former chairman of Jaspur municipal council,  Mohammed Umar had filed a petition in the high court stating that the government is not holding the local body elections. The government has appointed administrators in local bodies for a period of six months and this term is also about to end on November 2. He has stated that the government should either conduct the local body elections by November 2 or allow the elected public representatives to work. Taking serious cognisance of the issue, the high court has sought a reply from the state government.

It should be mentioned here that the local body elections were to be held in the state before May 3 this year. However, due to delay in holding these polls, the state election commission had approached the high court. The SEC had submitted the schedule for holding the local body polls by April 28 but these could not be held and in May the government appointed administrators in local bodies.
