The Uttarakhand High Court heard the public interest litigation of Dehradun resident Anu Pant regarding the illegal constructions and illegal tree felling in the Corbett national park. The division bench of Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice Alok Kumar Verma reserved its judgement in the case. On the last date, the court had directed that a report be submitted on the action taken against those found involved in the illegal constructions and illegal tree felling in Corbett. During the hearing on Friday, the counsel for the petitioner stated that the court had directed the chief secretary about one year ago to take action against those involved in the illegal tree felling. The petitioner contended that about 6,000 trees had been felled and five inquiries were held but no action has been taken against the guilty. The chief secretary had stated in his affidavit that the court will be informed from time to time about the action being taken in this matter but the court has not been informed about any concrete fact in the past one year, the petitioner stated. The Supreme Court had also stated in its order that not a single tree can be cut in the Corbett tiger reserve but at present according to the Forest Survey of India, at least 6,000 trees have been cut in this protected area. The petitioner further stated that according to the Joshi committee formed by the head of the Forest department, a number of officers had also been found responsible but no action had been taken against these officials, the petitioner contended.
