HC orders stay on B Warrant against news channel CEO

Ordering a stay on a B warrant issued against television news channel chief executive officer Umesh Sharma, the High Court of Uttarakhand has directed the investigation officer to submit reply in the court by December 5 or appear in person in the court. These directions were issued by the single bench of justice Lok Pal Singh in a petition filed by Sharma.

According to the case details, Dehradun resident Vinay Malik had lodged an FIR on November 2, 2018 at the Rajpur police station in Dehradun against Sharma, Ashish Aron, Vikram and Jitendra. He had alleged that Sharma and three other persons were trying to take possession of his plot of land. However, the petitioner had stated that the said plot of land belongs to Aron and that in 1999, the court had also ruled in favour of Aron. While Aron had secured a stay from the high court in the past, the investigation officer had filed an application in a Dehradun court for issuance of a B warrant. Contending that this was against the rules, Sharma challenged the said warrant in the high court.

Hearing his petition, the single bench ordered a stay on the B warrant and directed the investigation officer to either submit a reply in the court or appear personally in the court by December 5.

It is also pertinent to mention here that in his petition, Sharma has also made Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat and additional chief secretary Om Prakash parties in this case.

He has alleged that they also have a hand in the FIRs being lodged against him.
