HC nixes State Govt plea to extend panchayat poll dates

The Uttarakhand Government, which has failed to convince the Nainital High Court on Friday, may approach the apex court for relief.

Presenting a resolution, which was passed by the Uttarakhand Vidhan Sabha, before the High Court, the State Government had appealed that it would be difficult to conduct Panchayat election this early, as the Government delimitation of Panchayat bodies and wards was yet to complete. Meanwhile, the State Election Commission may announce Panchayat poll dates by Sunday. After rejecting the petition of the State Government for the extension of date to conduct polls, the Naintial High Court has ordered the State Government to complete the panchayat polls by March 29.

Earlier, code of conduct for Panchayat election was slated to happen on February 13, but the court had given 10 days’ relief to the State Government. Thereafter, BJP MlA Bishan Singh Chufal has raised the matter before the House that due to upgradation, there is a need to have fresh delimitation; otherwise, it would be mockery to have election on previous delimitation. Thereafter, the House had unanimously passed a resolution to conduct fresh delimitation.
