The absence of proper traffic is causing huge inconvenience to both commuters and motorists in the State Capital specially during morning and evening hours daily. Moreover, the city patrol unit has remained apathetic to the traffic snarls caused daily outside schools by improperly parked vehicles of guardians and hired school vans coming to pick up the students.
Critics are questioning city patrol unit’s selective approach while imposing challans on traffic violators. This unit imposes challans on vehicle users for traffic violations but ignore traffic violations outside schools.
Though State Director General of Police BS Sidhu had recently ordered school authorities to make arrangement for parking their school buses, autos, vans and parents’ vehicles within school campus, the school authorities have not implemented his order so far.
Sources in the police department revealed that district police had drafted a traffic plan around a month ago and sent it to the police headquarters but this has not been approved yet. Road users faced traffic congestion at various places including Kargi Chowk, Survey Chowk and other places during busy hours on Friday. Police had been deployed at the intersections to regulate the traffic but could not prevent the congestion.
In the last three days of checking drive in the city, the city patrol unit seized around three dozen vehicles and around 2000 challans were issued to those violating traffic rules including about 23 police personnel. However, city residents have mixed reactions to deployment of untrained city patrol unit members. Some residents are questioning as to how this unit can impose penalty on two-wheeler riders for triple riding when two adults and a child are on travelling on a two-wheeler.
