Former Union Minister and senior BJP leader Harmohan Dhawan on Saturday visited Panjab University campus and met the student union leaders sitting on hunger strike demanding removal of Chandan Rana -an NSUI candidate- from Punjab University Student Council’s president’s post, which he won recently in PU student poll.
The senior leader pledged his support to the student movement.
Dhawan earlier met PU VC in this regard and informed student leaders about his discussion with him. Dhawan informed the student leaders that Vice Chancellor told that there had been large scale violations of the guidelines of the lyngdoh Committee and further told that the CCTV footage was being examined and other evidences were also being collected and a decision will be taken shortly.
He said that VC further told him that these violations were done by all the groups contesting the elections. But the candidates contested the elections in their individual capacity. The Vice Chancellor said that no individual action can be taken but the gross violations of the guidelines of the lyngdoh committee may result in declaring the elections null and void. Dhawan appreciated the cause for which the students are fighting and congratulated them.
About 47 supporters from eight student organisations of PU are sitting on hunger strike outside the VC office since Thursday, demanding a re-election for the Students’ Council members alleging rampant violations of the lyngdoh guidelines by parties this year.
