Hailstorms lead to power cuts in Terai region

Published on:

Amid cold waves, rain   accompanied by hailstorm that lashed the Terai region  of Uttarakhand hit normal here on Tuesday morning. Besides,  the prevailing weather conditions also led to snowfall in upper reaches of the Himalayan State. Compounding things for the people, the adverse weather conditions triggered power-cuts in different parts of the region, including Haldwani, on Tuesday.  Power outages continued for hours in different parts of Haldwani on Tuesday morning.  Increasing demand of power is another cause for the dragging spells of power-cuts, it is learnt.

The hilly and remote areas are the worst hit due to poor supply of power.  local faults have added to the woes of the citizens.  The met department forecast moderate to heavy rain and snowfall in areas above 2,500 meter between February 1 and February 3.  The people belonging to upper pockets of  the hill districts like Pithoragarh  are bearing the brunt of the cold wave intensifying. Other districts of Uttarakhand, including Chamoli and Uttarakashi, are also reeling under the cold spell.

However, the weather conditions that had resulted in dip in the mercury in the Terai region improved a bit on Tuesday afternoon.  However,  fog continues to hit normal life across the region, hitting mobility, particularly during the peak morning and evening hours. With poor visibility throwing the vehicular traffic out of gear, the long distance commuters are reaching  destinations several hours late.  Moreover, the rain left many roads in Haldwani waterlogged.
