Guv sees bigger role for teachers in today's world

Uttarakhand Governor Dr K K Paul said on Friday that in this era dominated by the internet, the role of the teachers is different from what it was earlier. Speaking at the inauguration of a two-day conference of principals and teachers here, he said the internet has made available information of oceanic proportions to the students, landing thus the teachers before enormous challenges.

Now, the teachers must play their roles in inculcating originality and creativity in the adolescent students besides presenting examples of ethical living before them. He said the children whose parents are working are singularly vulnerable to the environment as there is nobody to guide them through. This marks a sensitive stage in their lives. They can be led astray if they are not rightly guided. Dr Paul said here the teachers must step in to fill the void left in their impressionable minds.

lauding the youth as the country's future, he said value-oriented education is what is needed to make the students good citizens. As the Indian civilization epitomises values the students must be inspired to imbibe these timeless values in themselves. Invoking Swami Vivekananda, the Governor said the monk while addressing Chicago congregation in 1893 said that tailor made a man a gentleman in America while in India, character made a man a gentleman.
