Guv inspects flyovers under construction

Published on:

Governor K K Paul  inspected three  under-construction flyovers in Dehradun on Tuesday. Sounding unhappy with the snail’s pace with which things are going on, he  asked the executing agencies to complete the projects well within  the deadline without compromising on the quality and public safety.

To ensure this, the Governor constituted a project management committee to be headed by Additional Chief Secretary S Ramaswami. The committee will send its report after making physical

inspections of these flyover sites on weekly basis. To ensure quality construction, the Governor instructed to make third party laboratory quality test as well.

Observers say that the Governor being extremely wary over things invokes  the memory of an under-construction flyover collapsing in Kolkata, killing over 25 and injuring many more.

On Tuesday, Paul visited Balliwala, Ballupur and ISBT under-construction flyover sites and also inspected the work funded by ADB. After  the physical inspection was over,  the Governor convened a meeting with the officials concerned at  the secretariat and asked them to take care of public safety seriously.

The project management committee with  ACS Ramaswami at its head have been assigned to visit ADB- funded work and report to him on weekly basis. Other members would be Garhwal commissioner, secretaries, PWD and urban development, chief engineer, PWD and some other officials.

He made it clear that excuses like lack of construction materials or manpower crunch would not  be brooked.  He said that the National Highway norms should be adhered to in the preparation of the signage.

He stressed on limiting the speed of the traffic in view of two -lane flyovers being constructed.  He also asked all concerned to be considerate about the people  living near the sites. Warning against any kind of malpractice, he said the officials must stop the construction materials from reaching   the nearby homes.
