Two tourists being gang-raped (one was murdered after being raped) in two separate incidents in Dehradun district in a span of a few months have left the State Government anguished, fearing an adverse impact on the tourist footfalls. Dehradun is a tourist spot, drawing lakhs of tourists all round the year, many of them heading for Mussoorie, the queen of hills.

One of the incidents occurred in October last year when a woman was gang-raped in Chakrata in Dehradun district. A Kolkata-based tourist couple had gone to Chakrata from Dehradun to visit Tagore Fall and other tourist destinations in the region. They hired a bus on October 23 evening.  While the couple was heading towards Tagore fall four accused had allegedly gang-raped and murdered   the woman after murdering the man. Their bodies were thrown at two separate places. Missing complaints were reported in Delhi and Kolkata on October 28 last.

In the recent incident that happened in Mussoorie on September 24 night, around 22- year- old woman, again from Bengal (Siliguri in north Bengal) was allegedly gang- raped by six persons, including two home guards, in a guest house in Mussoorie. She had reached Mussoorie alone. At library Chowk, on the pretext of helping the woman, four persons, sitting in a car, took her to a guest house the same evening. Two bike- borne persons who were following the car also reached the guest house where all of them allegedly gang- raped her. One guest house employee was also allegedly involved. She later reached the police station and reported her complaint.
