Govt fails to put check on rising crimes: Bhatt

Rise in crimes, including murder in plain districts of Uttarakhand in the last few months has become a major concern for the State. Udham Singh Nagar Police are clueless about the identity of the culprits a day after former students’ union president of Rudrapur Degree College, Pratap Singh Bisht, was shot dead in broad daylight at Shakti Farm on Saturday.

leader of Opposition in the Assembly Ajay Bhatt accused State Government of failing to put a check on increasing crime  in particular, and deteriorating law and order situation in general. Bhatt demanded resignation from the Congress led State government on moral grounds for failing to put check on crimes in the State.  Uttarakhand was once known as a peaceful place but now there are a number of crime cases like land mafia, mining mafia, and liquor mafia among others. In general, the Government has failed to take measures for restoring public confidence and sense of security. Reacting to Bisht’s death,  Bhatt alleged that State has failed to improve law and order situation as repeated incidents of murder, gang rape and other crimes are being reported frequently. The gang war among the mining mafia might have caused Bisht’s death.

Recently, firing between two rival gangs was reported outside Roorkee jail. In the recent bomb blast, one student died on the spot in Roorkee. Such incidents have instilled fear among the residents of this peaceful State. The Government should take measures restoring confidence among the people about their security, he added. Meanwhile, Sitarganj Police Station in-charge inspector Rajan lal Arya said that several teams including STF, Special Operation Group and other teams have been formed to solve Bisht’s murder. Some teams have been deployed in various places in Uttarakhand and neighbouring Uttar Pradesh. Teams have arrested some suspects who are being questioned. He hoped that teams would be able to apprehend the accused without delay. Bisht was killed when he was sitting in a shop and some bike-borne men fired several rounds killing him on the spot. Two people, who were sitting with Bisht, sustained bullet injuries too in the shooting, it is learnt.
