The old pump of the associated hospital of the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) which was malfunctioning was repaired on Tuesday. The faulty and old machine had precipitated a water crisis in the hospital. The Principal of the GDMC, Dr Pradeep Bharati Gupta said that the pump was repaired on the day.

He claimed that the hospital has sought additional water connections for both the male and female sections of the hospital from the Jal Sansthan.

The water woes in the biggest hospital of the State started last week when the pump went truant. The pump is said to be an old one and needed to be replaced but a cash strapped hospital is in no position to replace the old machine as it costs about Rs 2 lakh. On Monday, the water crisis took a serious turn as empty taps stared at thirsty patients and their relatives.

The dry spell ensured cancellation of all operations by the hospital surgeons on the day as well. In absence of water the patients were forced to purchase bottled water from outside. The Rajpur road MlA, Rajkumar dispatched four water tankers to the hospital.

On Tuesday the water crisis and other problem in the biggest hospital prompted the opposition BJP to burn the effigy of the State Health Minister. The workers assembled at the lansdowne chowk of engaged the vehement slogan shouting against the State Government for bringing woes to the patients.

The agitated workers were led by the Mahanagar President Umesh Agarwal. As a mark of protest the workers consigned the effigy of the State Health Minister to flames.
