Govt denies relief cheque bouncing charge by Opp

The State Government has denied reports of cheques given to disaster victims in Uttarakhand bouncing. The State administration has stressed that none of the monetary compensation cheques presented to people affected by the June disaster have bounced.

“The cheques issued as compensation to the disaster victims have not bounced. The Government has taken the news published in newspapers in this regard very seriously. An inquiry in the case has also been made through the District Magistrates,” said Disaster Management secretary Bhaskaranand while adding that the inquiry has revealed that the Government or the DMs have received no complaint from any disaster victims of their cheques having bounced.

Bhaskaranand further said that only two such cheques had been returned by the disaster victims since there was an error in their name or the account number. The errors took place because the beneficiary had written the wrong name, deposited the cheque in the wrong bank or entered the wrong account number.

He added that even in these cases, the cheques were given to the DMs concerned who rectified the cheque and have already re-issued them. He assured that compensation cheques had been distributed to all those affected. It should be noted here that the Opposition had alleged that cheques given to some disaster victims had bounced.
