Goons' fleeing an unfortunate event: DGP Pandey

Police officers’ nonchalance had helped Amit Malik alias Bhura escape from the police custody in Baghpat. The police officers must be serious enough to stop recurrence of such incidents in future, opined former Uttarakhand Director General of Police JS Pandey while talking to The Pioneer on Wednesday. Pandey said the escape was an unfortunate incident. Police officers should be better prepared in the future when they would be assigned with the task of producing the hard-core criminals in the court for a hearing. However, in the same breath, Pandey defended the cops for not resorting to retaliatory firing on the criminals during the incident. It could have resulted in some casualties on the spot. He further said police have all the details about the accused Bhura and the teams would be able to the arrest him sooner or later.

Moreover, the police officers should draft two separate lists, separating the hard- core criminals from those imprisoned on minor offences. The Government has already issued guidelines on how to transit the prisoners from the jail to the court and vice versa. What is required is their strict implementation, he stressed. In this case, police officers were complacent despite knowing the fact that Bhura is a notorious gangster with around 40 cases related to murder, loot and other heinous crimes being tagged to him.  As Baghpat is just four hour journey from Dehradun the accused should have been taken by the police in a government van the same day. Police should imbibe lessons from the incident and go for course correction to stop recurrence of the same in future, he added.
