While maintaining the ban on animal sacrifice in the name of religion, an order by a bench of the Uttarakhand High Court has brought some 'relief' for proponents of the ritual by allowing sacrifice of goats at the Naina Devi temple in Nainital.
However, the petitioner in the similar matter filed an Intervention and a Recall Application in the matter on Thursday and got the matter to be mentioned before the bench of Justice VK Bist. The petitioner has written to State Chief Secretary Shatrughna Singh pointing out purportedly questionable aspects in the official process.
Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) member Gauri Maulekhi wrote to Singh of "an order being passed by the HC bench of justices UC Dhyani and VK Bist on September 7 on a petition filed seeking permission for consecration of goats at the Naina Devi temple for ritual slaughter. The court has allowed the prayer".
